How to add accents to your home

How to add accents to your home

Choosing an accent color is the most exciting part of your design journey. As the name suggests, your accent color will make the exterior of your home pop! The purpose of this shade is to catch the eye and draw attention to a specific element on your home.

Areas to consider

The front door, shutters, gables as well as below bay windows, are perfect places for an accent color. If you wish to draw attention to the front door, we suggest selecting a contrasting shade to your overall color scheme; such as a black door pair with a muted earth tone or a vivid yellow door matched with a deep granite color

For gables and the bottom of a bay window, we love the idea of choosing a color that pulls from the primary color but yet adds a pop. A few of our favorite combinations, a pale grey accent color will add light and freshness when combined with a darker charcoal color palette. Going for a more dramatic effect, a striking orange paired with a deep, warm brown shade will definitely grab the eye.

Shutters are a great way to frame your home as well as add instant curb appeal. They are one of the first elements your eye will be drawn to. However, before you go off and add shutters please consider the architecture of your home. Shutters are commonly used on Colonial, Cape Cod as well as traditional homes. Using shutters on these specific styles will definitely elevate the look of your home. Traditional colors such as black, white, navy as well as brown tend to be the leading shades.

Choosing an accent color in contrasting brightness as well as texture will enhance the shade further. As an example, using traditional lap siding on the exterior of your home and adding your accent color, in the gables, in staggered shakes will further emphasize your home’s architecture. Mixing opposing materials, such as the coolness of aluminum siding with the warmth of wood, is a great way to make the exterior feel more welcoming.

Be mindful

When we fall in love with a color, it’s tempting to place it in many areas. This is when balance plays a big part. If you have many textures on the exterior, (stone, stucco, polymeric siding) simplicity might be key. A lovely muted tone will pull it all together. And if the thought of more than one color on your home is overwhelming, selecting your overall color in a different material will give you that extra flair without being too much.

Snap it and design it

With all the design tools out there currently, it has never been easier to actually see what your home will look like before you make your final decisions. Take a picture of your home and play around with your color and material options. Create your virtual vision board and share with family and friends. Designing your dream home exterior can be scary, exciting and at times stressful but driving up to your vision is so worth it.
